Texture page
Statement of intent:
For this project my theme is texture and I am going to research a variety of textures. For example metals , manmade objects, leaves and fruit. To show my work I have built my own photography website and I have used the software Weebly to create it. I found this quite easy to use as the tools are easy to follow but sometimes I found it quite difficult editing a few of my pictures. For my final images, I will choose my best images and put them in a final gallery at the end of my project.
For my underlying exploration I will begin by investigating 'Surface' photographic artists. Right now, I have three as a top priority that I need to see at. These are Roe Etheridege, Imogen Cunningham and Marc Anderson. I picked Roe Etheridge in light of the fact that he's a cutting edge picture taker that reports organic product rotting and I believe that I can acquire a piece of inspiration from for my own work. I decided to research Imogen Cunningham's Black and White photography ' as her work centers around Texture and I feel that the dark and white symbolism not so to speak draws out the surface but rather additionally looks proficient and striking. I likewise desire to take a gander at crafted by Marc Anderson and in explicit his game plan of 'Examples in Nature'. I feel that his work is unique and lovely and will awaken my own photography.
When I chose this topic, my initial thoughts were of natural textures such as fruit, leaves, plants and spider webs. After thinking about the project title more thoroughly I figure it out there are so many more courses for my work to go down such as man made textures, how I might combine and differentiate the different textures and if I could do studio shots as well as going outside on area.
To show movement through my work I will begin by shooting the natural product, leaves and plants that I can bring into school. I will at that point build up these pictures further by taking more thoughts from them and altering them in Photoshop. I plan to go on trips and assemble great pictures of texture I can find outside. I will go out on different days to gather images of different weather textures. As of now I have a lot of ideas for my project that I will try to introduce into my work.
I would like to experiment with a wide range of techniques within my work. I have a Manuel DSLR Canon camera which I will take most of my photographs on, but I would also like to experiment with my own mobile phone camera and a possible telescopic lens to see the effects that I can create it with-it I will also try to push myself to be more creative within Photoshop, Photo pea learning how to use the image adjustment layer for Black and White, exposure, levels, colour saturations and contrast. I will also experiment with the magic cut techniques and creating patterns.
I have 3 months to produce my Website of work towards the production of my final piece. I aim to complete my initial research within the 3 week and begin photographing by the 4th week in order to give me the time I need to show progression. I will at that point continue to develop my work in photoshop and be prepared to go out again with my camera and capture new pictures to enhance my project. When I have completed the project, I will select my best photography outcomes and display them in my final display.
As my project progresses I will use annotations throughout my web page labelling my ideas and development clearly. This will also help me to reflect on the work I produce. I will mainly seek advice from my Tutors and my peers on how to make my work better, as I’m always aiming to push myself to new levels. I will also watch tutorials and demonstrations and find my own as well to help me develop my skills and knowledge of Photoshop. After the creation of my final portfolio I will write a final evaluation on the project as a whole, reflecting on what went well and what I would do differently or change given the time.

Imogen Cunningham photography research:
Context
IMOGEN CUNNINGHAM
(AMERICAN, 1883 - 1976 )
I have researched about Imogen Cunningham on the internet
"Imogen Cunningham occupies a singular position in the history of American art of the twentieth century. For over half the history of photography, she explored- with innovation and a new perspective- all the major traditions associated with the medium as fine art. She has been most widely acclaimed for the photographs made during the 1920s and 1930s, particularly close-up images of plants and nudes. She also made portraits which are now considered classics in photography, including images of Alfred Stieglitz, Spencer Tracy, and Martha Graham. She was a founding member of the West Coast-based Group f.64, which championed an un-manipulated, direct approach with the camera, or “straight” photography. Her photographs are represented in major collections and museums around the world. The Weston Gallery represents the Imogen Cunningham Trust and have vintage, modern as well as posthumous prints available.

Composition
Imogen Cunningham uses contrast in her image as she uses a light and dark color to make the image stand out. The light on the image makes you focus on the petal in the photograph against the black background which gives a monochromatic effect to the image. Sweet spot is in the bottom left corner on a grid, the eye is drawn straight to the Centre where the flower is. In the foreground the flower catches the eye of the person looking at the image because the background is black and dark so the flower stands out because it is white. The flower image has been cropped tightly so that it looks like a very clear close up image. The image has curved and spiral lines created by the petals and leaves of the plant, down into the Centre of the flower, leading your eye again into the Centre In my opinion, I think this image is a Studio shot composed carefully using studio lighting, tripod for the camera. The Contrast brings out a big difference between the black of the background and the white of the flower which Brings out the form and shape of the flower. In my opinion, I think this image is a Studio shot because the image has a black background which tells me it was most likely taken in a studio with studio light so we can see the petals, tripod for the camera to keep it still and level. The Contrast brings out a big difference between the black of the background and the white of the flower which brings out the form and shape of the flower.
Connections:
I have decided to get my project started by look at a range of photographers. Those who come up with different backgrounds the ones that use flowers. I am looking at the work of Imogen Cunningham because she comes up with unique ideas over the theme of texture and focuses more on plants adding Black and white and close ups giving every inch of detail. I am going to use her work to inspire my own photography by taking pictures of mother nature for example flowers and that she gives the shallow of depth and really crops them images tightly giving them that appealing look. Also she uses the rule of third. The Rule of Thirds is the process of dividing an image into thirds. This is why I'm interested and fascinated by her work making ordinary into extraordinary good looking and sophisticated.
Comment:
In my opinion I have decided after some careful research that I like Imogen Cunningham's work. This is because it is unique and different to other photographers. It zooms into rather the shape of the flowers than the object. Its literally the state of the art because of how beautiful she has made the pictures. Making the negative space framing the flowers contrasts and shading making the forms standout.
Reasearch:
In this image I can see the photographer has used a deep depth of field because we can see in the foreground the detail of the grass, in the middle ground we can see the detail of the bark on the trunks and in the distance there is a little bit of the sky. This helps to create a sense of a deep depth and this technique makes the viewers eye focus on the details of the photograph. In my opinion I think the close-up of the grass shows all the vibrant colours and patterns, which stand out but also blend together.
In this image I can see the foreground which is all the grass on the right side which is close to the camera. In the middle ground there are 2 trees and in the distance there is the sky. This creates an impact because it gives you an close up and a depth of field shot and everything has been put in focus.
In the image the photographer has used natural sunlight during the afternoon and evening time to get that golden colour in the picture which brings out all the colours in the picture and the trees in the picture puts an shadow creating an even darker colour to blend with the others.
In my opinion, I think the photographer has set their camera on auto ISO or 100/200
White balance, auto or set on cloudy/sun
I think the aperture is set quite deep as we can see the background clearly, so F27-F36
Looking at the image I can see that everything is in sharp focus and so I think the shutter was fast as there is no blur. They may have used a tripod when taking the photo so that they could keep the camera steady and get the sharp image they wanted.
I really like this image because I like the way the photographer has captured the moving golden grass and I think it will inspire to take my own images around the theme of Texture.
Although I can see that the image has been taken well, I don’t really like it. That is because I am not keen on the subject matter as I prefer a picture where I can see a lot going on and I can easily interpret what is going on in the picture.

Research 2 Roe Etheridge:
Context:
“Roe Ethridge (American, born 1969) takes equally from his work as a commercial photographer, and artist. Blurring the lines that separate the two, Ethridge creates images that are simultaneously generic and intimate, often treading between humor and cynicism. Functioning in tandem, these motivations coalesce into an ongoing investigation into the mechanics of photographs, and their ability to both retreat into the personal, and expand to relay collective experiences. In 2016, the Contemporary Art Centre, Cincinnati mounted the first comprehensive survey of Ethridge’s work in an American Museum, titled Nearest Neighbor. Other solo exhibitions include Shelter Island, FOAM, Amsterdam, 2016 and Le Consortium, Dijon, 2012, travelled to Museum Leuven, Leuven, 2012. Ethridge has additionally participated in numerous group exhibitions including The Poetics of Place: Contemporary Photographs from the Met Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2016, Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney’s Collection, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 2016, Perfect Likeness: Photography and Composition, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, 2015, The 2013 Lyon Biennale, Lyon, The Anxiety of Photography, Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, 2012, New Photography 2010: Roe Ethridge, Elad Lassry, Alex Prager, Amanda Ross-Ho, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the 2008 Whitney Biennial, among others.”
Composition:
In this photo Roe Etheridge has used rule of thirds and close ups. One thing that stands out in this photo are all the different vibrant colours. In my opinion, when I look at this image, I can see that Roe Etheridge has used the rule of thirds, because the orange site in the ‘sweet spot’, in the top right hand side. This makes us look at that particular piece of fruit. I can also that the bowl is sitting on a barrel which is in the bottom third of the image, this makes the fruit stand out. In the composition he has made sure that there is a blank canvas (background) around the fruit bowl so that it stands out. There are a lot of curved shaped The image is tightly cropped so that we focus on the fruit bowl and do not distracted by other objects, I think the photographer wants us to focus on the mould. Framed by using the brown paper and strawberries. In this image I can see that the photographer has placed 2 strawberries into the foreground, the bowl of fruit is in the middle and there is a natural wood background, this all makes us look carefully at the fruit bowl and it’s contents.
I can see that this is definitely a studio shot, the lighting is coming from the top left hand corner and there is a strong shadow in the bottom right hand side, this adds interest to the image.

This links to my project as I hope to take pictures like this and this image inspires me to improve my photography skills and to do so I will try copy the same techniques that Roe Etheridge uses to improve my work and make it look more professional.

Mind map:
Shoot plan:
For my project on ‘Texture’, my starting point is looking at a range of different textures, both man made and natural Texture. I am going to start by taking photographs of the different textures such as fog and the rain effects and when it's sunny because of the texture and you can get good lighting and the angle of how you took the picture to help inspire me I am going to look at this photographer called Roe Etheridge.
Equipment I am going to use
I am going to use a range of different cameras and equipment so that I can explore/develop my photography skills. In school we use Canon DSLR cameras so that we learn to use the manual settings. Before we take a photograph we have to change the white balance and we have to make it focus.(WB,ISO, Exposure etc) The reason we do this is because we are learning the skills of taking photos. My theme For my next shoot I am going to focus on taking a set of images based on fruits and vegetables. Lighting I am going to use,
I will use the natural daylight if taking photos outside, however, I might experiment with shining a camera torch onto an object so that I can get a better effect. I am going to take my images outside when the sun is out
What I hope to achieve. By taking photographs from the environment around me. I will also get images that are unique to me and so my work will become a professional photographer.

Natural texture:
Cabbage:
Best and Worst images:
These are my best and worst images for the cabbage the image on the left is the best because I have used great lighting and I am perfectly zoomed out to get a clear shot of the whole image. My camera setting was set on tungsten to get a nice blue light filter in my image. The shot was taken with a clear white background to get a clear focus of the object. The image on the left is the worst because not all of the image is included because I was too zoomed in and the object around the image aren't fully focused either. To improve I should zoom more out and use better camera settings.
red cabbage:
Best and worst images:
These are my best and worst images the image on the left is the best because the object covers the entire shot making it easier to see all the details on the object and it was a very still shot making it focused very well however the image on the left was not taken carefully causing the image to not be focused leaving it very blurry and the object was not taken close enough so you can see the background and you cannot see the details properly. to improve i should use a tripod to get a clear still image of the object.
kiwi:
Best and worst images:
these are my best and worst images the one on the left is the best because you can clearly see every little detail on the object and it perfectly focused and the perfect white background gives me a clear shot of the whole object. the image on the left is the worst because I have not shot it from the right angle and didn't keep the camera still enough either causing the outcome to be to low and blurry to improve it I could use a tripod to keep it still to get a focused shot and from the right angle.
apples:
Best and Worst images:
These are my best and worst images for the apple the image on the right in my best image because it looks very professional the lighting is set up perfectly for the shot which give the objects a nice glow effect the background are two solid colours to get a nice focus on the object only the image is very still as well to get the best outcome as possible. The image on the right is the worst because the image is very blurry and it is too hard to see the objects in the image which doesn't show the lighting used in the image either. To improve I will
cauliflower:
These are my best and worst images for the cauliflower the image on the left is the best because I have included the whole image and used a solid background to get a clear focused shot of the object. The image on the left is the worst because it is too zoomed in which has caused it to go blurry and the whole object can't be seen.
Corn:
Best and Worst images:
These are my best images for the corn the image on the left is the best because all of the object it included in the image it is perfectly zoomed in so you can see every detail on the object I have used a clear grey background which makes it easier for the object to focus. The image on the right is the worst because the object is mostly at the bottom of the image and the grey colour isn't covering the whole background which ruins the background of the image. The image should be in the middle and the shot should be a bit more to the left so the grey colour covers the whole background.
pineapple:
Best and worst images:
These are my best and worst images the image on the left is my best image because the colours stand out a lot making it look very pleasant to the eye the solid background makes the image focus much better and it is a close up shot so you can see ever detail on the fruit. The image on the right is my worst image because the image is laid down so you cant see it properly it is very blurry so you cant see the details on the fruit properly. To improve I could focus the whole shot properly and use a better background.
grape fruit:
These are my best and worst images The image on the left is my best image because it is clearly focused the whole object is in the picture its perfectly zoomed in and you can see the shine from the fruit and its has a clear background so the object focuses better. The image on the left is my worst image because I have not used any camera settings the object is blurry so I hadn't focused the camera properly I was too zoomed out so you couldn't see the details on the fruit clearly. To improve I could use a tripod to capture a better shot of the object.
orange:
Best and worst:
These images are my best and worst images the image on the left is my best because I have a clear white background which helps the two objects focus much better you can also clearly see the details on both of the objects and both of the objects are fully seen in the image. The image on the right is my worst image because only half of the image is focused and the other half is blurry and the background doesn't cover everything so the top left of the image is not fully white. To improve I could focus the whole object and cover the entire background.
pomegranate:
These are my best images The image on the left is my best image because the whole image is included you can see every detail on the object there is a black background which helps the image to focus better. The image on the right is the worst image because both of the images are out of shot and very blurry and you can't see any details on the objects.
spider webs:
Best and worst images:
These are my best images the image on the left is my best image because I'm perfectly zoomed in so you can see the rain drops on the spider web I have used the tungsten setting on the camera to give my picture a blue light filter. I have used f stop on my camera to blur the background so I get a clear shot on my object. The image on the right is my worst image because it is a very plain picture and looks very average the background ruins the shot of the image because it is focused with the image if the background was blurred the object would have looked better.
